You've heard all about the riots, the shootings, the ridiculous asking prices on eBay, and chances are if you've tried to snag a PS3 recently, you've gone home empty-handed. So is NotifyWire.com to be believed when they tell us that the PS3 ain't sellin' so good? Yep. Sorta. Let's break it down.
Though the 360's sales numbers trounce the PS3's, it's not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, more like apples to apple pie. (mmm ... pie.) Technically, it's the same thing, as the numbers being crunched are from last year's 360 launch and this year's PS3 debut, but it's not quite the same thing because the comparison isn't based on total units sold or pre-ordered, but the speed at which console bundles depart store shelves. The breakdown, according to Notifywire's Ian Drake:
"Last year, at NotifyWire.com, we tracked several one thousand dollar Xbox 360 bundles which would sell out in less than two minutes after becoming available. [Recently], a one thousand dollar PS3 bundle was in stock at eToys.com for over 12 hours. This sort of thing didn't happen with the Xbox 360 until well after Christmas."
The comparison isn't quite as fair as it could be, due to the difference in base console prices, but it does illustrate the point that consumers don't seem as willing to pony up the cash for a PS3 bundle as they were to pay for one for the 360. Perhaps buyers are just plain sick of the bundle concept, or maybe paying elevated gas prices all year has left them with not as much spending cash as they had for Christmas 2005. There are many factors that could be playing into the sluggish movement of the PS3 bundles, including, of course, simple lack of interest.
PS3s for sale on eBay in the weeks following the launch have either sold far below expectations or not sold at all, a fact certain to be breaking the hearts of profiteering douchebags nationwide. We weep for them.
