Bread and circuses! No, not like that… Plot and originality! That’s the thing computer games fans want very much now. They demand new original and, of course, high quality games. Recent boosted Peter Moulinet’s projects The Movies and Black & White 2 did not come up to gamers’ expectations. Prey had no enough potencies and desire to get on the podium. And of course, “original games” created by our companies are not able to take universal acclaim.
So what to do? Is it time just to take an old Space Rangers (or some other game) disk from the shelf and to enjoy almost endless spaces of virtual worlds with a sorrow sigh? Wait a minute! Someone who was enough courageous to free his hands from fetters of the stamps and standards and to declare about creation of the game including almost all the genres came!
His name is Will Right. And he leads the way to project that has already been acclaimed “the most innovative one” in spite of the fact it has not been ready yet. Welcome to Spore! There are so many new things…
A few words about the plot.
We know Will Right and Maxis quite good. Revolutionary SimCity where you should have built your own town was rather complicated but extremely captivating game. There were life simulators for homo sapiens in real conditions of real time of The Sims, plenty of addons, three-dimensional sequel. All those games brought fame to Maxis. And now we will get new original idea from Will Right and the company – they are developing extremely original game. Why so?
For example, because that is more difficult to determinate genre of the game than to make fish talk. Arcade, strategy, action-RPG are mixed here… The project should have been called «All Mixed Up, or how to make something excellent from many ordinary components». But enough general information, it’s time to talk about the core of gameplay. First you manage some one-celled unit like infusorium or amoeba (don’t laugh). It is situated in some nutritious liquid with other similar beings.

Our goal on this stage of the game is to eat them. The more you eat the more experience you get. And you may use your experience to upgrade your shapeless unit. Soon it will be the time for our unit’s evolution. And it will turn into a beautiful multicellular organism. Or not beautiful one… It depends on player. There will be extremely powerful 3D-editor giving a possibility to edit our alter-ego to us. So our multicellular unit runs around, kill the weaker units and runs from the stronger ones, get experience, upgrade and, of course, multiply.
They promise to develop great diversity of mating games so we will have no troubles with it. When we get control over the group of similar animals and our intellect will be upgraded enough the game will start to look like The Sims. Our tribal studies, hunts, gathers fruits. But experience points don’t upgrade the beings now. They improve their mode of life. A few generations later our multiplied units are too numerous to locate in one building. And then SimCity starts. Player becomes a city ruler. He should build streets, parks, squares and monuments.
